Eric W Classey, J.P., F.R.E.S.     ::     1916 - 2008

Memory no.1

A.J. Gay

I first established contact with Eric in the late 50's when I was still living in Poland.  I sent him books he wanted, mostly Russian and received in return a fountain pen or a tent.  A typical example of East-West individual barter trading.

I first met him in 1959 when I and my wife were allowed to travel to Holland and England.  I was struck then and later by his understanding of the misery of all the people held behind the Iron Curtain and his will to help as much as he could.

Later, when I and my wife managed to escape Poland and settled in Holland our contacts became closer.  I enjoyed many stays with Eric and his wife, many trips to the countryside, many talks, until late in the night, not only on entomology but also on history, another hobby.  When he visited us here I tried my best to show him interesting things about our adopted country.

I treasured his friendship.  He was a good friend and a good man.  I shall miss him.
