Eric W Classey, J.P., F.R.E.S. :: 1916 - 2008
Memory no.3

Eric and I were looking for Purple Emperor butterflies on a sunny July afternoon in Eartham Woods, West Sussex in 1950. We parted each to work the open woodland rides where the butterflies would swoop past at speed. When we met up Eric was beside himself with dismay because he had clapped his net over a fresh male iris taking moisture, but which had escaped via a deep wheel rut, prompting Eric's normal equable disposition and controlled prose to be quite unrepeatable. |
