Memory no.8

Dick, Fay &  Charles Hornabrook

Until his illness, my father was always an enthusiastic naturalist with a particular passion for entomology.  His interest in collecting natural history books was sustained through to his older years.  Within this context we shared our interest with Eric and always looked forward to his book catalogues (where ever we were living at the time) and on occasion visited him and his shop in the UK.  I was aware as I grew up that my father bought many books from Eric over the years and I knew that he shared a deep friendship and loyalty to Eric and his bookstore.

I have only recently discovered that Eric (with characteristic generosity) felt sorry for my mother (who was English) marrying my father, a New Zealander who took her off to a life overseas.  In view of this Eric provided a subscription of the magazine "This England" to my mother for many years as some form of connection or solace for all that she had left behind when she left her home and family in the UK for a life in New Zealand and the Pacific.
